After School Creative Writing Club
Redhill School

The Redhill Creative Writing Club is a place for young writers who love writing creatively, in any and all forms.

My name is Ken Preston and I am an author and a creative writing teacher.

My passion is creative writing and sharing that passion amongst young people and adults. I work with primary school children, teenagers and disadvantaged adults.
At Redhill Secondary School, I lead an after school creative writing workshop on Wednesdays during term time, for children in years 7, 8 and 9. The club runs for an hour and a half and is –
  • Fun! We laugh a lot during the sessions.
  • Friendly and informal.
  • Small – max. 15 children.
  • Varied – your child will do all kinds of writing, from fiction to poetry to playwriting
  • We work on creative writing rather than spelling or punctuation
  • Is a chance for your child to develop their creative writing
  • A way to grow their confidence in their writing
  • Not assessed – your child will get feedback and suggestions, but no “grades” or “attainment levels” are given
New sessions will be starting in September 2018. Sign up now for more information and to register your interest. Please note, registering your interest does not guarantee a place.
  • Hannah has loved writing club from night one and has probably never been as enthusiastic about any other club. She has continued to write stories in her spare time and I can only imagine it would have helped her work in school. The main thing is she has had fun!

  • Both Milo and Matilda have thoroughly enjoyed creative writing this term. Matilda has said that she feels it has helped her with her SATs this year, and helped improve her vocabulary and spelling. Milo loves anything that allows his imagination to run riot!

  • I’ve repeated the words “thank you” so often that somehow, they don’t seem adequate enough to express my feelings of gratitude. You’ve provided me with not just an online formatting service but generosity of spirit, speed and efficiency,  dependability and trust. I regard these as rare qualities, rare qualities indeed. Caroline agrees with me and has also expressed her gratitude. A big thank you from both of us.

  • The course was focused, challenging and thoroughly enjoyable with expert delivery which had me writing in ways I didn't know I could. Fantastic, thank you.

  • This course has enabled me to see that I can write rather than just thinking about it. If you feel there is a book in you then this is the place to start. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Such good fun and creative.

  • "Can I just give a HUGE shout out to Nick for recommending Ken Preston’s book formatting service, and an even bigger shout out to Ken himself! Nothing was too much trouble and he delivers a great job."

  • I have enjoyed creative writing this year a lot and wish I could do it for longer because you put a lot of effort into organising our club and always listen if we ask to do specific writing. We play games as well and at the end of the night if we have time we will read out our writing which I love doing. At the end of the year we publish a book which has your own stories in. I love writing club and hope that others give it a go.

  • It was very informative and met my expectations. Great advice and practical tips. Thank you.

  • This course was ideal for me, as someone who has been away from the writing world for a long time and talking about formats and structures was great. I would have enjoyed a longer course as I was enjoying it so much.

  • Ken’s workshops manage to be extremely practical but not limiting. You feel able to explore the topic, to try out ideas and just to enjoy the atmosphere he creates. Yet throughout it all, you are getting specific, informed, useful information from a writer who has done exactly what you want to do. I came away having had a good time and feeling fired up, ready to write.
